Wrong Way Driving countermeasure systems are designed to prevent potential collisions by warning offending drivers while alerting and providing an image verification of the event to the local traffic management center.

Wrong way driving is a serious offense and a potentially deadly hazard, especially on high-speed ramps. It is estimated 400 persons are killed annually in the U.S. due to head-on collisions from wrong way drivers. As a result, transportation agencies are aggressively seeking solutions to wrong way hazards and increasing their spending in this regard.

It is estimated 400 persons are killed annually in the U.S. due to head-on collisions from wrong way drivers. As a result, transportation agencies are aggressively seeking wrong way driving solutions.

GovComm has developed a WWVDS that is superlative to competing systems for performance and reliability. GovComm’s system achieves fewer false positives and delivers more accurate alerts by utilizing a combination of advanced technology cameras and GovComm’s proprietary AI software.

GovComm’s WWVDS is comprised of three essential hardware components: a bi-spectrum optical and thermal camera, a computation module (where the AI detection application resides) and several highlighted warning signs.

The optical sensor provides sharp, detailed images essential to target identification and classification while the thermal sensor assures reliable detection capabilities under all lighting and weather conditions. Both camera streams are continuously fed to the GovComm AI software running on the computation module which analyzes both video streams simultaneously and produces alarms when the conditions for a valid wrong way event are detected.

These alarms trigger flashing red lights embedded on “wrong way” warning signs to alert the driver while simultaneously sending a notification with notification and image verification to the local traffic management center.

Competing systems from several other companies may also utilize cameras or even radar or ground loop sensors to detect wrong way traffic but do not offer the same performance as GovComm’s system. The key to GovComm’s superiority lies in both its detection technology and its AI software.

Radar and loop detectors can detect a vehicle but with less accuracy, higher false positives and lack the ability to classify the target as an automobile, truck or motorcycle, etc. In the case of radar, persons or animals may trigger false alarms and ground sensors may fail to detect motorcycles or vehicles that pass outside or at the edge of the sensor loop. These systems may also deploy an optical camera for video verification and detection, but they typically do not improve system performance.

More importantly, GovComm developed AI software runs on a powerful computation module that produces real-time detections and notifications while reducing false positives and false negatives. GovComm’s AI software also has a unique advantage over its competitors as it can learn to improve detection and accuracy in each unique scene and site of deployment. Other competing systems are limited to fixed capabilities in their edge devices and have limited configuration capabilities for site deployments.

After installation, GovComm engineers remotely calibrate and train the AI engine for each deployment site using the company’s configuration learning utility, reducing costly delivery delays, and providing a smooth path to project acceptance for ITS contractors.
